Pine or spruce — which to choose for building and finishing
Pine is slightly denser and more resinous, so it copes better with moisture — it is the usual choice for floors, decking and outdoor structures. Spruce is lighter, paler and easier to work, which makes it ideal for framing, rafters and interior finishing. Both are softwoods of similar strength, so they are often used side by side.
Our timber is pine and spruce, and we produce it ourselves in Latvia. Below we explain how the two differ and which to pick for a given job.
Properties of pine and spruce
Pine
Pine has a distinct heartwood — a reddish-brown core — and paler, yellowish sapwood. The heartwood holds more resin, so it naturally resists moisture better. Over time pine darkens to a warm honey tone. Its knots are usually reddish and well bonded to the wood. The sapwood absorbs preservatives well, which is why pine is the most common species for pressure treatment.
Spruce
Spruce is light, almost white, with little colour difference between core and edges. It is lighter and softer, easy to saw and nail. It has less resin, though occasional resin pockets occur. Spruce knots are harder and more brittle, and dead knots can fall out. Spruce is hard to impregnate deeply, so outdoors it is usually protected with paint or a surface treatment.
Comparison table
| Property | Pine | Spruce |
|---|---|---|
| Density and weight | Slightly denser and heavier | Lighter |
| Resin | More, especially in the heartwood | Less, occasional resin pockets |
| Colour | Yellowish, reddish-brown core, darkens over time | Pale, almost white |
| Knots | Reddish, well bonded | Harder, darker, may fall out |
| Outdoor durability | Better, takes treatment well | Lower, needs paint or treatment |
| Workability | Planes well, resin can gum up tools | Easy to saw and nail, knots may chip |
| Typical use | Floors, decking, fences, treated timber | Framing, rafters, battens, interior finishing |
Where to use each
Building and structures
Both species suit framing, joists, rafters and battens, as their strength is similar. Spruce is lighter and easier to handle on a roof. For outdoor structures or ground contact, choose pine and have it treated. See sawn timber and fresh-sawn boards and beams (e.g. 50x100, 50x150, 100x100).
Floors
Pine's density and attractive grain make it a classic choice for wooden floors. A spruce floor is paler and softer, so it dents more easily. Our floor boards are pine and spruce.
Decking and fences
Outdoors, treated pine performs best because it absorbs preservative deeply; untreated decking needs regular oiling. See our decking boards.
Finishing
Spruce is popular for interiors and painted facades — it is pale, even and holds paint well. Pine gives a warmer tone and a bolder grain. Both are available in tongue-and-groove cladding. Softwoods are not advised for sauna benches because resin seeps out in the heat — aspen boards are used for that.
Fresh-sawn, antiseptic or pressure-treated
Species is only half the decision — treatment matters too. Read how they differ in fresh-sawn, antiseptic or pressure-treated timber.

FAQ
Which is stronger, pine or spruce?
Their strength is similar; pine is slightly denser. Both are suitable for structures.
Which wood is best for decking?
Pressure-treated pine lasts longest outdoors; untreated pine or spruce decking also works if it is oiled regularly.
Does spruce need protection outdoors?
Yes. Untreated spruce deteriorates faster outside, so paint it or apply a preservative.
Why does pine darken over time?
Light naturally turns pine yellowish-brown. A UV-protective finish slows this down.
Can I order pine only or spruce only?
Our boards are pine and spruce. Ask about the species in the current batch on +371 29568256.
